Shirley Tomatoes: old fashionned tomatoes....

22 July 2015

One summer shift we make is that in July to September, we take most of our tomatoes from Jacobs Farm, next door to Wild Fields up in Essex. They are a small scale family producer, whom we support by taking all the varieties that they produce.

New in this week, they have yellow cherry tomatoes, very small and sweet (it is very dry up in Essex at present, the tomatoes love it!).

We also have the first of the Shirley tomatoes coming in. The Shirleys are an old fashionned variety: quite soft skinned, heavy-fleshed, and very tasty. You are unlikely to see them in the supermarkets: they bruise too easily, but they will be picked on Friday morning and so will be in great condition.

And this is of course in addition to their Red Cherry & Vanessa Tomatoes.
