Autumn Fruit Harvest update: a mixed picture

24 June 2015

Looking ahead to our Autumn Harvest we have a mixed picture currently - Clay Barn Farm of Fingringhoe, Essex who grow our Medlars, Quince & Crabapples are reporting that the trees have flowered and the fruit set really well - and they are expecting a very strong harvest, beginning with Crabapples at the start of September - so please start storing those jamjars for your crab apple jelly.

We are on the lookout for a local-resi home-cook to russle up some crabapple jelly and quince jam for us this Autumn - if you fancy helping us out this way, please get in touch (info@farm-direct.com).

Contrastingly, our pear growers, The Stevens Family, Elm Farm, Kent have a miserable outlook, and are worried the pears (which usually run until March) will be finished by Christmas.

Why? Well in short, we don't really know - you look back and wonder if the cold snap came too late, or the early winter was too mild, but it is rarely clear - harvests can and do vary a lot....
