Veggie update - Sun-loving city slickers vs rain-dancing growers.

17 June 2015

Its getting to that time of year again, when things start to split. It happens every year!

One the one side, our sun-loving customers want warm weather & flip-flops, and to be freshened up with crunchy lettuce, juicy tomatoes, and freshly cut spinach.

And on the other side, our growers start to get fretful, counting the days without rain, looking forlornly at the forecast, and starting their rain-dance. Potted seedlings for the autumn crops such as leeks and celeriac start to get delivered, and they need some nice forecast rain to welcome them into the fields.

How to reconcile these two sides? Well we can't, but just spare a thought is all we ask, and hope that we have nice steady overnight rain in the shires to keep the veggies in plentiful supply, and the planting done.

Flat runner beans start, Little Gems return.

We have the first of the flat beans in this week from Simon at Jacobs Farm in Goldhanger Lane this week.

You would be forgiven for mistaking these for runner beans, and whilst they are really, Simon is adamant that they are more like a french bean - softer, plumper and are not stringy, they need little cooking and go beautifully with new potatoes.

We have a crop gap in the Cos lettuces this week, but luckily the little Red Gem lettuces & Oak Leaf Lettuces are back up and ready and they offer a nice crunchy substitute!
